Centers of Science

Science is exciting. The rapid progression of technology is tribute to how fast science is moving forward and changing the world with it. During just this month, the interplanetary space probe New Horizons captured the first clear images of Pluto after a 9 year mission and a few days ago, NASA revealed the existence of Kepler-452b, the first potentially rocky super-Earth, orbiting a sun like star and at a distance of 1400 light years from Earth. Such discoveries are truly fascinating, and all we really need to look at it is how far other aspects such as electronics and medicine have come in the space of mere decades to appreciate what Science has done for humanity. As a tribute to it, there are many museums located in the US which are dedicated to science. Here are a few of them.
Center of Science and Industry (Columbus, Ohio)
The COSI is a science and research center which features more than three hundred exhibits in different themed areas. These areas include Ocean, Energy, Space, Progress, Gadgets, Life, and Adventure. It houses exhibits which include a recreation of John Glenn's Friendship 7 spacecraft from the Mercury-Atlas 6 and the Van de Graaff generator.
Museum of Science, Boston
It contains an impressive 700 exhibits as well as live presentations throughout the day. It also houses over a 100 animals most of which have been rehabilitated from near extinction and dangerous situations - the museum is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Exploratorium, San Francisco
It was described by the New York Times as the most important science museum which has opened since the mid-20th century. According to them it has a wide ranging influence and sophisticated teacher training program. It is also lauded for the participatory nature of its exhibits which number in the thousands and of which 600 are on the floor at any given time. Visitors can view San Francisco's pervasive fog with a walk along the museum's fog bridge.
California Space Center, Los Angeles
One of the most 'hands on' science museums in existence, it consists of the Sketch Foundation Gallery, an IMAX Theatre, Air and Space Exhibits (designed by Frank Gehry) and the Science Center itself which opened an Ecosystems wings in 2010. It was also chosen by NASA to house its retired Space Shuttle Endeavor which flew 25 missions during its years of service from1992 to 2011.
Academy of Natural Sciences (of Drexel University), Philadelphia
This museum is famous for the complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil which welcomes visitors at the entrance. It is one of the oldest natural science research institutions and museums in the US having been founded in 1812.
Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, Washington D.C.
It holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world. In 2014 it got an astounding 6.7 million visitors. It has over 60,000 artefacts related to flight and its history including the 1903 Wright Flyer.
These are just some of the Science Museum's in America which are definitely worth a visit if you like science even a little bit.
